For fans of Holly Black and Nova Ren Suma, a gripping, hauntingly atmospheric novel about murder, revenge, and a world where monsters—human and otherwise—lurk at the fringes.

When seventeen-year-old Breezy Lin wakes up in a shallow grave one year after her death, she doesn’t remember who killed her or why. All she knows is that she’s somehow conscious—and not only that, she’s able to sense who around her is hiding a murderous past. In life, Breezy was always drawn to the elegance of the universe and the mystery of the stars. Now she must set out to find answers and discover what is to become of her in the gritty, dangerous world to which she now belongs—where killers hide in plain sight and a sinister cult is hunting for strange creatures like her. What she finds is at once empowering, redemptive, and dangerous.

Tense, complex, and wholly engaging, Shallow Graves is a stunning first novel from Kali Wallace.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange of a review. No compensation in any form was received for the review of this book.

The thing about prose novels is that they’re sort of a make or break for me. This one, I had mixed feelings about, mostly positive though.

Things I liked about the book: Interesting narration and gripping story. The story really got me hooked from the first page. It was written excellently too! I liked how mysterious the book was and it was really interesting and cool to read.

Things I didn’t really like about the book: Character dump! There were too many characters introduced into the book that it got to the point where there was no character development at all. All I got was the closure from Breezy’s death. I also felt like things were happening so fast that I’ve lost track of what I’m reading and it made me really confused.

Overall, I did enjoy reading the book although I found it a bit dragging at first but once I found the right rhythm, my reading was smooth until I finished it. It is an excellent debut and Kali Wallace is someone to look out for!
